Correcting & Dissolving Dermal Filler

As the popularity of dermal fillers increases, so has the number of correcting and dissolving treatments. However, many of our clients are unaware that dissolving may be needed and why this may be the case.

Today we will explain why you may need to dissolve dermal filler, how it works, when you can reinject, and tips for reducing risk when it comes to this treatment.

WHY MAY DERMAL FILLER NEED DISSOLVING?

There are numerous reasons why we may need to dissolve the dermal filler. In some cases, it is a medical reason and in others, it is purely aesthetic.

One of the most common reasons clients ask for dermal filler to be dissolved is due to a change in trends. While fuller lips and cheeks were a popular look a few years ago, many clients are preferring a more natural-looking result now. Filler is naturally metabolised by the body over time, however, dissolving can be used to speed up the process.

Another common reason for dissolving is product misplacement or migration of filler. This is when the filler moves from the injected area (e.g. the lips) to another area (e.g. above the lip line). In some cases, the filler may form lumps that are unsightly and uncomfortable. This can cause the result to look unnatural and may also restrict muscle movement.

Dissolving may also be required if the previous treatment was performed incorrectly. Technique and product choice are key to achieving the best results. If your injector is inexperienced or chooses the wrong type of filler, we may need to remove it completely to achieve the desired look.

In rare cases, dermal filler may need to be dissolved for medical reasons. This can be due to the product accidentally being injected into your blood vessels instead of under your skin, which can block blood flow. The severity of this complication depends on the treatment area and how long it is left before being resolved. It is particularly dangerous under the eye as it can cause vision impairment. In other areas, it may cause tissue necrosis if left untreated.

Our experienced team of injectors will be able to analyse any previous filler treatments and advise whether dissolving or correction may be necessary.

HOW DOES DISSOLVING WORK?

To dissolve dermal filler, an enzyme is injected into the treatment area at a high concentration to remove the unwanted product quickly.

Once injected, the dermal filler will begin to soften immediately. Due to the nature of the treatment, swelling is common so it may take 1-2 days to see the full effect of the treatment.

Once the swelling has subsided, we are able to assess the area and determine whether one dissolving session is enough or if further treatment may be required. Depending on the complexity of the case, 1-3 sessions may be required.

WHEN CAN I HAVE DERMAL FILLER REINJECTED?

Once all swelling and bruising have subsided, we can assess the treatment area's suitability for re-treatment. This usually takes about two to four weeks.

Our team will be able to recommend a suitable treatment plan, using the appropriate product and technique to achieve a safe and desirable result. While getting dermal filler dissolved may not be the most preferable procedure, it will ensure flawless results and a safer treatment long-term.

HOW TO REDUCE THE RISK OF DISSOLVING

While some complications are unavoidable, most often it comes down to making the most informed decision about your treatment. Here are our main tips for reducing the need to have your treatment dissolved:

  • Choose an experienced injector and have a consultation before your treatment. Ask lots of questions and have a look at their treatment photos. Complications are more likely to arise if an injector is inexperienced.

  • Ask about the product used. Laws restrict injectors from advertising brand names online so make sure you know that a reputable product is being used.

  • Take a conservative approach and choose a treatment that will enhance your features. Trends often pass so make sure your treatment is still something you’ll love in a few years!
